Tom’s Barn – 5 Star, dog friendly romantic cottage for two
“Thank you for another wonderful week in Tom’s Barn, the cosiest and most comfortable cottage we have ever come across” October 2012
About Tom’s Barn
Tom’s Barn is our dog friendly self-catering holiday accommodation for two. Like Douglas’s Barn it is all about peaceful and quiet Five Star luxury in the Peak District with wonderful walks right from the door yet only a short stroll from the heart of the village with its pub and little shop.
You, like most our Tom’s Barn guests, may find you love the romantic galleried bedroom (complete with ancient rood truss) the two-seater whirlpool bath and the cosy log burner. If you like to holiday with your dog you may also be grateful – and maybe surprised – to find a top quality Five Star cottage that is spotless as well as dog-friendly.
A Little Bit of Tom’s Barn History
Tom’s Barn is indeed bright, warm, welcoming and spotlessly clean. It is hard to believe now, but before we converted it in 1999, it was the most decrepit and cobweb-festooned old barn you could imagine, filthy and smelling pretty unpleasant, too. It was hard to imagine at the time, but our vision was to create top quality holiday accommodation with all modern comforts, whilst remaining as faithful as possible to the original design – just as well, as being in the Peak Park one had little choice. We kept as much of the original structure as we could, reusing the original stone where walls had to be repaired and retaining all the old and somewhat misshapen wooden lintels. We equipped the barns with the best we could find, and furnished them with a blend of antique and modern. We have a rolling programme of redecoration and renewals to keep Tom’s Barn fresh as new. Janet, our ‘right hand’ whom many of you know, terrorises any spiders who dare now to set foot, and keeps the place sparkling and sweet smelling…
The previous owner of Orchard Farm was Tom, a well-liked village character, but probably not the best farmer in the world and certainly not the most dedicated homemaker. After years of neglect the house and barns were in an unbelievably awful state.
It took us months just simply getting the house and outbuildings reasonably habitable, before we were able to start on the rather more exciting and certainly very rewarding transformation of the adjoining traditional limestone cowsheds. Needless to say this process is ongoing.
It was at least twenty years before people stopped referring to Orchard Farm as ‘Tom’s place’, hence Tom’s Barn. We now have a grandson, Tom, who is just over 8 years old, and lives in Sydney NSW; he has always assumed quite reasonably that Tom’s Barn must be his and he therefore the absentee landlord.
When he is a little older we may look forward to some comments (we won’t yet accept any instructions!) on our Blog.
He seems quite happy at present with the way things are going.
